LEONIA — More than two-thirds of the school maintenance staff, along with two secretaries and two teacher’s aides, will be laid off under a $25.6 million school budget approved Wednesday by the Board of Education.
The layoffs, which Superintendent Bernard Josefsberg described as “painful cuts,” would reduce payroll by $1.05 million, helping to offset the loss of $1.3 million in state aid.
The amount to be raised in school taxes is $16.5 million, a 4 percent increase for homeowners over the current spending plan.
The owner of a home assessed at $478,419, the borough average, would pay $5,803 in school taxes, an increase of $223 from last year.
